Want to avoid a Massachusetts divorce? It turns out that where you go on your honeymoon can have a bigimpact on the health of your marriage. A recent report surveyed 3,100 people whose marriage ended in divorce to see where they went on their honeymoon. Although it ranks on some lists as a top bucket list honeymoon destination, it turns out that the Maldives is the biggest marriage wrecker.
According to the report, 20% of couples who got divorced had traveled to the dreamy drop-out islands of the Maldives in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Next worst on the list was Marrakesh, where 17% of honeymoons ended in divorce after visiting this exotic city in Morocco. Rounding out the top five was Bora Bora (13%), Bali (10%) and Mauritius (8%).
If you want to stay together, safer choices include Nairobi, Maui, Napa Valley and Bangkok—which all reported a mere 1% divorce rate.
On the other hand, maybe you’re getting divorced and want to celebrate it. One travel company is promoting The Islands of Tahiti as the place to go after a divorce. Call it a “divorceabration.” True Tahiti Vacation recently launched a range of trips that combine a divorce and celebration with experiences ranging from solitude and reflection to fun and adventure. Travelers can pick from five- to seven-night packages including “Living the Dream” and “Let Freedom Ring” to “New Adventures” and “Your Best Life.”
Celebrating a divorce takes on a new life as our guests look out at the turquoise lagoons and up at the velvet green mountains. It’s an opportunity to sit back and toast with a best friend that you survived the divorce, acknowledge how beautiful life is and look forward to all that lies ahead.”
